Bullet Journaling

This is not my idea, nor am I the first to blog about--not by a long shot. In fact, I first heard of bullet journals from Buzzfeed. In fact it was in this article. Very useful. Highly recommend.

Since starting my own bullet journal, I've found that there is a very active community of bullet journalers online, and specifically on Instagram. From this community, I've gleaned some handy tips and tricks that I've incorporated into my daily bullet-journaling. Here are my favorites concerning bullet journaling.

Favorite Pens:

Muji 12-Pack Colored Pens--$12

These pens write so smoothly and have such vibrant colors, how could you resist? If you found a way to resist, let me just point out that these cost $12, which is $1 per pen, which is insane. So there you go.

Favorite Journals:
Moleskine large dotted notebook--$20

Moleskines are pretty much the universal favorite of all people who like paper and putting pen on it. I am one of those people. But I am a recognized stationary addict, so I really don't discriminate when it comes to notebooks or paper. This particular notebook is just nice because it has some nice uniform dots to guide your journaling.

Favorite Instagrams:
Looking at what other bullet journalers are doing helps me get inspired for my own journal. And sometimes I just flat out copy them. Art is stealing, right? According to that one book, at least. But take a look at some of these journals. They're beautiful and organized enough to give you a hernia.

Favorite Organizations:

  • Weekly spread: I've loved putting the first three days of the week on the top half of one page, and then the following four days on the facing page.
  • Menu: Planning out what to eat for the week help with shopping, and makes cooking easier because it takes out the stressful decision every night at 6pm.
  • Tasks: If I know I need to complete a task soon, but don't know exactly which day I'll have time, a weekly Task section comes in very handy. It keeps To-Dos from slipping between the cracks.
  • Water and Sleep: I can always use more water and more sleep. By keeping a weekly chart, I get the satisfaction of seeing progress towards my goals. Plus it's colorful.

        Favorite Pages:

  • Index: I think one of the things that makes a bullet journal a bullet journal is the index page.
  • Books. I love making a To Read list and crossing off the titles as I read my way through the list
  • Movies: Almost every other day I say "I need to watch that!" and then when I want to watch a movie, I spend an hour scrolling through Netflix and settle on re-watching 30 Rock. Now, I just flip to my Movies page!
  • Monthly Gratitude: At the start of each month, I set aside a page, list all the days of that month, and every day I write something I was grateful for that day. It puts things in perspective and helps you realize how many things you have to be grateful for.
  • Monthly Habits; This page mostly just looks cool. It's a big grid with squares for every habit and every day of the month. If you complete the habit, you get to fill in a square. Some of my habits I want to track are exercise, reading, vitamins, 8 hours of sleep, 4 big bottles of water, and blogging ;) how meta. Sometimes I take my vitamins just so I can color in the square. The huge row of colorless boxes also makes it glaringly obvious how little I exercise, which will hopefully prompt me to exercise more one day. Not today though.
  • Monthly Memories: Just like the gratitude and Habit pages, I have a Memory page for each month. It's big and blank on the first, but as the month goes on, I fill it with drawings and notes about things I want to be able to look back on.
  • Budget: I would like to have a budget page, and I have a picture of a scrap of paper I wrote a monthly budget on once during class, which is close. I plan on starting a budget page next month, listing what I aim to spend on certain categories, and then ruthlessly marking down what I actually spent, no matter how much it hurts.
  • Travel: I mark down all the places I see pictures of that I want to go to someday. Hopefully one day, I'll have enough time and money to actually use this page.
